About the Artist
The Bee Gees — brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb — are among the most successful recording acts in history, with over 220 million records sold worldwide. Formed in Brisbane, Australia in the late 1950s and rising to prominence in the UK through the 1960s, the trio reinvented themselves spectacularly in the mid-1970s, pivoting from melodic pop-rock to become the undisputed kings of the disco era. Their contribution to the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack (1977) was a cultural earthquake — one of the best-selling soundtracks of all time — and it set the stage for Spirits Having Flown to arrive at the absolute peak of their commercial power.
About the Album
Spirits Having Flown was released in January 1979 on RSO Records, riding the extraordinary momentum of Saturday Night Fever and delivering on every expectation. Produced by the Bee Gees themselves alongside Karl Richardson and Albhy Galuten — their trusted production team throughout the disco era — the album is a lush, meticulously crafted record that showcases the trio at the absolute height of their craft.
It debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and topped charts in the UK, Canada, Australia, and across Europe. The album spawned three consecutive #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 — a feat matched by only a handful of artists in chart history. “Too Much Heaven” opens the album with a sweeping, orchestrated ballad of breathtaking beauty; the Gibbs donated all royalties from the song to UNICEF, performing it at the Music for UNICEF Concert at the United Nations in January 1979. “Tragedy” is the album’s centrepiece — a driving, falsetto-powered disco anthem with one of the most dramatic builds in pop music, and one of the defining singles of the era. “Love You Inside Out” rounded out the trio of chart-toppers, a smooth, groove-driven closer that demonstrated the group’s effortless command of the dancefloor.
The Canadian pressing — noted in the Side A matrix — is a well-regarded variant among collectors, pressed by Quality Records (the “Q” in the matrix) and cut by Sterling Sound, both hallmarks of a quality North American pressing.
