About the Artist
Joe Jackson is one of the most restlessly inventive musicians to emerge from the late-1970s British new wave scene — an artist who has never been content to repeat himself and whose catalogue spans new wave, jazz, pop, classical, and big band with equal conviction. Born David Ian Jackson in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire in 1954, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music before channelling his classical training into something far more urgent and angular. His debut album arrived in 1979 at the height of the post-punk moment, and it announced a major new voice with a sharp wit, a sharper melodic instinct, and a gift for capturing the frustrations and ironies of everyday life with uncommon precision.
About the Album
Look Sharp! was released in January 1979 on A&M Records and is widely regarded as one of the finest debut albums of the new wave era. Produced by David Kershenbaum, the record is a lean, propulsive collection of songs driven by Jackson’s piano, Graham Maby’s melodic bass, and a rhythm section that locks in with almost mechanical precision — yet never loses its human edge. There are no guitar solos, no excess, no filler. Every track is tightly wound and purposeful, with Jackson’s acerbic observations delivered in a voice that bristles with barely contained energy.
The album’s opening track “One More Time” sets the tone immediately — urgent, rhythmically taut, and melodically irresistible. “Sunday Papers” is a sardonic commentary on tabloid culture that holds up remarkably well decades later. But the album’s centrepiece and enduring classic is “Is She Really Going Out with Him?” — a wry, hook-laden portrait of romantic jealousy that became a Top 40 hit in both the UK and the US and remains one of the defining singles of the new wave era. The album also features “Look Sharp” and “Baby Stick Around”, both showcasing the band’s ability to build tension and release with minimal instrumentation and maximum impact.
Look Sharp! reached #20 on the Billboard 200 and #40 on the UK Albums Chart, and has only grown in critical stature over the decades. It is consistently cited as an essential record of its era and a masterclass in economical, intelligent pop songwriting.
