A mini DisplayPort is not the same as Thunderbolt. While they use the same physical connector, Thunderbolt technology combines the DisplayPort interface with PCI Express for faster data transfer speeds. This means Thunderbolt can carry both video and data signals, whereas a mini DisplayPort can only transmit video.
