Phil Collins is one of the most commercially successful artists of the 1980s — a rare talent who achieved simultaneous superstardom as both a solo artist and the frontman of Genesis. Born in Chiswick, London in 1951, Collins began his career as a drummer before stepping into the lead vocalist role for Genesis following Peter Gabriel's departure in 1975. His solo debut, Face Value (1981), announced a new chapter defined by intimate songwriting, lush production, and an unmistakable voice that could shift from tender to urgent in a single breath. By the mid-1980s, Collins had become one of the defining sounds of the decade — inescapable on radio, film soundtracks, and stadium stages worldwide.

About the Album

No Jacket Required was released in February 1985 on Atlantic Records and became one of the best-selling albums of the entire decade. Produced by Collins and Hugh Padgham — the duo behind the iconic gated reverb drum sound that defined an era — the album is a masterclass in polished, hook-driven pop-rock. It debuted at #1 in both the UK and the US, spent seven weeks atop the Billboard 200, and was certified 12x Platinum in the United States alone. It won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1986.

The album opens with the irresistible “Sussudio”, a synth-funk juggernaut that reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains one of Collins’s most recognizable tracks. “One More Night” is a slow-burning ballad of longing that also topped the charts, while “Don’t Lose My Number” delivers a more urgent, rhythmically charged energy. The album also features “Take Me Home”, a sweeping closer that became a fan favourite and a staple of his live shows for decades. Guest appearances from Sting and Helen Terry add further texture to an already richly layered record.

Record Condition

This copy has been carefully cleaned with a Spin-Clean record washer and stored in a new inner plastic sleeve. The vinyl presents with minor surface scuffs but played flawlessly on a quality turntable with no skips. Minor pops and crackles were noted during playback, consistent with the visual grade.
