About Styx and the music
Formed in Chicago, Styx became known for combining progressive-rock ambition with memorable arena-rock hooks, keyboards and guitar-driven arrangements.
Too Much Time On My Hands, written and sung by Tommy Shaw, appeared on the band's 1981 album Paradise Theatre. Its distinctive keyboard opening, rhythmic drive and catchy chorus showcase the band's polished melodic-rock sound. Paradise Theatre uses the rise and decline of a theatre as its conceptual backdrop.
Queen Of Spades originally appeared on the 1978 album Pieces Of Eight. Written by Dennis DeYoung and James Young, the track pairs a dramatic opening with a harder-rocking arrangement. Pieces Of Eight balances the band's progressive flourishes with a strong guitar-rock approach.
