About the Artist
The Knack were a Los Angeles-based power pop band formed in 1978, fronted by the charismatic Doug Fieger alongside Berton Averre (guitar), Prescott Niles (bass), and Bruce Gary (drums). Drawing inspiration from the British Invasion — particularly The Beatles and early rock 'n' roll — the band crafted a lean, hook-driven sound that stood in sharp contrast to the bloated arena rock and disco dominating the late '70s airwaves. Their image was equally deliberate: skinny ties, stripped-down suits, and an unapologetic embrace of raw pop energy.
About the Album
Get the Knack, released in June 1979 on Capitol Records, is one of the fastest-selling debut albums in rock history. Produced by Mike Chapman (known for his work with Blondie and Sweet), the album was recorded in just eleven days at Western Sound Studios in Los Angeles — a testament to the band's tight live rehearsal regimen. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and remained there for five weeks, eventually selling over six million copies worldwide.
The album's success was driven by the explosive lead single "My Sharona", which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks and became the best-selling single of 1979. Its iconic guitar riff — one of the most recognizable in rock — was written by Fieger and Averre and remains a cultural touchstone to this day.
Critics were divided: some celebrated the album as a breath of fresh air, while others dismissed it as derivative. Regardless, Get the Knack is now widely recognized as a landmark of the power pop genre and a defining document of its era.
