UFO – Obsession (Vinyl LP, 1978) | Chrysalis CHR-1182
UFO – Obsession (1978)
By 1978, UFO had forged one of the most potent lineups in British hard rock: vocalist Phil Mogg, the mercurial German guitar virtuoso Michael Schenker, bassist Pete Way, drummer Andy Parker, and keyboardist/guitarist Paul Raymond. Obsession was their sixth studio album and the last to feature Schenker before his departure — making it both a creative peak and a bittersweet farewell to a classic era.
Produced by Ron Nevison and released on Chrysalis Records, Obsession captures the band at full throttle. The album opens with the anthemic "Only You Can Rock Me" — a hard rock declaration that became one of their signature songs — and never really lets up. "Pack It Up (And Go)" delivers a road-worn swagger, while "Cherry" showcases Schenker's melodic instincts at their most seductive. "Looking Out for No. 1" and "Arbory Hill" round out an album that balances muscular riffing with genuine songcraft. Schenker's tone throughout is unmistakable — warm, singing leads over a rhythm section that locks in with precision.
Obsession is widely regarded as essential listening for fans of late-'70s hard rock and proto-metal, and a cornerstone of UFO's catalogue.
