About Portage MCC
We are Portage MCC Community Assistance Centre, Inc., operating officially as Portage MCC Thrift Shop. Founded in 1983, we are a locally-operated, not-for-profit charity. We operate three stores, Portage MCC Thrift Shop, Portage MCC Furniture Plus, and East 135.
We own the Thrift Shop (building and land) and lease the Furniture Plus and East 135 buildings. Once a separate store operated by Portage MCC, The Common Thread is what we call our quilting, fabric, and notions operation now located inside Furniture Plus.
Portage MCC exists for the purpose of:
- Generating resources for MCC and the local community,
- Providing the community with opportunities to serve in the name of Christ and to donate items for re-use, and
- Making affordable goods available to those in need.
About MCC
Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is a worldwide ministry of Anabaptist churches which shares God's love and compassion for all in the name of Christ by responding to basic human needs and working for peace and justice.
As an MCC Thrift Shop, we primarily support and promote the work of Mennonite Central Committee through our partnership with MCC Manitoba. We are part of a network of sixteen MCC Thrift Shops in Manitoba, each independently operated. In addition, we partner with local agencies to meet local needs.
