About the Album
Long before streaming playlists and digital downloads, children gathered around the family record player to hear their favourite stories come alive. If I Ran the Zoo is one of those rare recordings that transported young listeners straight into the wonderfully absurd world of Dr. Seuss — a place where impossible creatures roam and imagination has no ceiling. Released on Colpix Records, this LP captures the playful cadence and rhyming genius of Theodor Seuss Geisel in a format that rewards careful listening, rewinding, and listening all over again.
About Dr. Seuss
Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904–1991) — known the world over as Dr. Seuss — was an American author, illustrator, and filmmaker whose work redefined children's literature. With more than 60 books to his name, including The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, Geisel's signature invented vocabulary, bouncing anapestic meter, and surreal illustrations made him one of the best-selling children's authors of all time. His stories consistently championed themes of tolerance, environmental stewardship, and the power of the individual imagination — messages that resonated with children and adults alike across generations.
About the Book & Story
First published in 1950, If I Ran the Zoo follows young Gerald McGrew, who wanders through his local zoo and decides — with characteristic Seussian confidence — that he could do far better. His imagined menagerie of fantastical creatures (the Nerkle, the Seersucker, the Preep) became some of the most beloved nonsense animals in literary history. The story won the Caldecott Honor in 1951 and remains a cornerstone of the Seuss canon, celebrated for its inventive wordplay and the sheer joy of its impossible zoology.
