Johnny Cash – Bitter Tears: Ballads of the American Indian Vinyl LP | CS 9048
Released in 1964, Bitter Tears: Ballads of the American Indian is one of Johnny Cash’s most socially conscious albums. Combining country and folk storytelling with his distinctive deep voice, Cash explores Indigenous history, injustice, and resilience. The album reflects his willingness to champion overlooked stories and take on difficult subjects.
Highlights include “The Ballad of Ira Hayes,” written by Peter La Farge, which recounts the life and tragic struggles of the Pima Marine who helped raise the flag at Iwo Jima. “As Long as the Grass Shall Grow” addresses broken treaty promises, while “Custer” offers a sharply critical perspective on a familiar historical figure. It’s a compelling listen for fans of Cash’s storytelling and folk-influenced recordings.
