About the Artist
Joni Mitchell is one of the most influential singer-songwriters of the 20th century. A Canadian-born artist who helped define the sound of the 1970s, Mitchell's work spans folk, rock, jazz, and orchestral pop with a lyrical depth and harmonic sophistication that set her apart from her contemporaries. Her open guitar tunings, confessional storytelling, and painterly imagery earned her a devoted following and the admiration of musicians across every genre. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest artists of her era — a true original.
About the Album
Hejira (1976) is widely considered one of Mitchell's finest achievements. Recorded in the aftermath of a cross-country road trip, the album is a meditation on freedom, solitude, and the restless pull of the open road. The title itself — an Arabic word for a journey of escape or migration — perfectly captures the album's mood: introspective, cinematic, and quietly searching.
What makes Hejira sonically distinctive is the extraordinary fretless bass work of Jaco Pastorius, whose fluid, melodic lines weave through the album like a second voice. His contributions give the record an almost orchestral intimacy, perfectly complementing Mitchell's layered guitar work and confessional vocals.
Highlights
- Coyote — A hypnotic opener that captures the tension between desire and independence, with Pastorius's bass dancing beneath Mitchell's imagery of a rooster and a rolling highway.
- Amelia — Perhaps the album's centrepiece: a stunning meditation on loss and longing, set against the Mojave Desert, with Mitchell drawing parallels between Amelia Earhart's disappearance and her own emotional wandering.
- Hejira — The title track is a masterclass in restraint and atmosphere, a late-night drive distilled into sound.
- Blue Motel Room and Refuge of the Roads round out a deeply cohesive listening experience that rewards repeated plays.
Condition
This copy has been carefully cleaned with a Spin-Clean record washer and stored in a new anti-static inner sleeve. The record shows minor surface scuffs consistent with age and handling, but played flawlessly on a quality turntable with no skips. Minor pops and crackles were noted, as expected for a vintage pressing of this era. Overall a very enjoyable play.
The jacket is in good condition and includes the original inner sleeve, as shown in photos. A solid addition to any serious collection.
