Journey – Evolution (Vinyl LP, FC35797)
Journey — Evolution (1979) | Vinyl LP
About the Artist
Journey emerged from San Francisco in 1973, initially as a jazz-fusion outfit before evolving into one of the defining arena rock bands of the late 1970s and 1980s. Anchored by the soaring tenor of Steve Perry, the technical guitar mastery of Neal Schon, and the keyboard wizardry of Gregg Rolie and later Jonathan Cain, Journey crafted a sound that was simultaneously radio-friendly and musically sophisticated. By the time Evolution arrived, the band had already built a devoted following through relentless touring and a string of increasingly polished albums.
About the Album
Released in 1979 on Columbia Records, Evolution marked a pivotal moment in Journey’s trajectory — the record where the band fully committed to the melodic hard rock and power ballad formula that would make them superstars. Produced by Roy Thomas Baker (known for his work with Queen), the album showcases a band firing on all cylinders: tight arrangements, lush production, and Perry’s voice at its most expressive. Evolution reached #20 on the Billboard 200 and went platinum, setting the stage for the blockbuster success of Departure and Escape.
Highlights
The album opens with the anthemic energy of “Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin’” — Journey’s first Top 20 single — a slow-burning, emotionally charged track that became a concert staple for decades. “Just the Same Way” and “Too Late” showcase the band’s ability to blend hard-driving rock with irresistible hooks, while “City of the Angels” offers a more reflective, atmospheric side. Neal Schon’s guitar work throughout is a masterclass in melodic lead playing — expressive without being indulgent.
